Lesson 1a -- World Book School Edition

1. Using World Book Kids, search for information on a mammal of your choice. Find a picture and information about its habitat.
Today, horses that roam free in parts of the Western United States are called wild horses or mustangs. They are related to the early tame horses used by American Indians and Spanish explorers. Some of these horses ran away from their owners and lived free together in groups or bands.
2. Using World Book Student, search for information on the same mammal you searched in World Book Kids and compare the amount of information.
The information in World Book Student goes more into depth without overwhelming. I am impressed at the amount of information and how easy it is to scan through.
3. Using World Book Advanced, search for a country. Notice the types of information available on the left and right side bars of the first results screen. Click on the link for your desired country, and again notice the types of information on the left and right side bars of the screen. What types of information will be most valuable to your patrons?
The left and right contain historical sources, informational articles and other primary sources and e-books. For High School students I think the primary sources and e-books would be very valuable for reports and for adults this may be useful for destination planning.
4. Using World Book Discover, go into the special features under “Reference Tools” (left side of the home page) and explore. Which ones would best suit your students and why?
Wow! I took a look at the timeline feature, students in the sixth grade just had a timeline assignment this would have been very helpful for them.
